Nehal Modi Arrested: Nehal Modi, brother of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam. This marks a significant diplomatic victory for India. According to the US Department of Justice, Nehal Modi, a Belgian citizen, was taken into custody on 4 July. The US prosecution complaint alleges two charges against him: money laundering under Section 3 of the PMLA, and criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">₹13,500 Crore Scam</h2>



Nirav Modi, his uncle Mehul Choksi, Nehal, and others are wanted by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for allegedly defrauding PNB of approximately ₹13,500 crore using fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LOUs). While Nirav Modi&#8217;s extradition has already been approved by the UK High Court, the process of bringing him to India is delayed due to several appeals filed by him.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Preparations Continue to Bring Nirav Modi to India</h2>



Nirav, currently imprisoned in London, was declared a fugitive economic offender in 2019. Earlier this year, the Belgian government stated that 65-year-old Choksi was arrested in Antwerp following India&#8217;s extradition request. Choksi fled India in 2018 and has since been residing as a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Next Hearing in Extradition Proceedings Scheduled for 17 July</h2>



The charges against Nehal Modi stem from ED and CBI investigations which revealed his crucial role in laundering the proceeds of crime on behalf of Nirav Modi. He now faces extradition from the UK. He is accused of assisting in concealing and transferring large sums of illicit money through a network of shell companies and complex foreign transactions to hide the proceeds of crime. The next hearing in the extradition proceedings is scheduled for 17 July. During this hearing, Nehal is likely to apply for bail. The US prosecution has stated that it will oppose his application.

According to data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), Stratus accounted for approximately 10% of total COVID cases in May, but this increased to 40% by mid-June. Because of this, Stratus has now become the dominant variant in England.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What is the Stratus (XFG) Variant?</h2>



Stratus is a new variant of Omicron, which scientists are also calling a Frankenstein or Recombinant Variant. This means the variant was created when an individual was simultaneously infected with two different COVID variants, and their combination produced a new strain.

According to Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist at Warwick University, Stratus is not currently causing more severe illness. However, he also stated that COVID vaccines are still effective in preventing serious illness and hospitalisation. The WHO (World Health Organization) has declared Stratus a ‘Variant Under Monitoring’ and considers its growth rate to be quite rapid. Currently, it is found in approximately 22% of COVID cases worldwide.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are the Symptoms of the Stratus Variant?</h2>



According to the NHS, the symptoms of Stratus are mostly the same as those of older COVID variants, such as:

Amarnath Yatra: Three buses carrying pilgrims collided on the Amarnath Yatra route in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. At least 36 people were injured in the accident. Officials said that the buses&#8217; brakes failed near Chandrakot on the Pahalgam route, causing them to collide. Police and health department rescue teams arrived at the scene immediately after receiving information about the incident. The injured were taken to Ramban District Hospital for first aid (Treatment).



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">36 Pilgrims Injured</h2>



Ramban&#8217;s Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Alyas Khan, stated that the last vehicle of the Pahalgam convoy lost control and collided with stranded vehicles at the Chandrakot Langer site. Four vehicles were damaged in this accident, and 36 pilgrims sustained injuries.



Dr. Mohammad Rafi, the In-charge Medical Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir District Hospital, said that a bus carrying pilgrims to the Amarnath Yatra collided with another bus. &#8220;We received a total of 36 injured patients. All the patients have been treated here; we did not refer anyone to another hospital. 10 patients have been discharged, and almost all patients will be discharged within the next hour,&#8221; he stated.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Yatra to Last 39 Days</h2>



The pilgrimage to the sacred Amarnath cave commenced on July 3rd. This 39-day-long yatra will conclude on August 9th, coinciding with Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan. Pilgrims choose between two routes, Pahalgam and Baltal, to reach the sacred cave situated at a height of 3,888 meters. Pilgrims travelling via the Pahalgam route cover a total distance of 46 kilometres on foot, passing through Chandanwari, Sheshnag, and Panchtarni.

DSSSB: The Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) has released a notification on 4 July 2025 for recruitment to 1676 vacant posts of Jail Warder in the Prisons Department. Only male candidates are eligible to apply for this recruitment drive. Eligible candidates can apply online from 8 July 2025 to 7 August 2025. Selected candidates will receive a monthly salary of ₹21,700 to ₹69,100 under Pay Level-3. In addition, DA, HRA, TA, medical allowance and other benefits will be provided as per government rules. However, these additional allowances will be granted after completion of the probation period.

DU UG Admission 2025: Delhi University (DU) is about to commence the second phase of its Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) 2025 for undergraduate (UG) course admissions. Candidates who haven&#8217;t yet registered under CSAS Phase-1 are advised to register promptly. The application window for CSAS Phase-2 might be only a week long, so candidates must complete the process in a timely manner. The DU session will begin on 1 August 2025.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Eligibility Requirements</h2>



Regarding eligibility, candidates must have passed class 12th from any recognised Indian or foreign board/university, equivalent to 10+2 as per the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Furthermore, to gain admission to DU, candidates must have appeared in CUET (UG) 2025 in the subjects they studied and passed in their 12th-grade examinations.

According to the meteorological department&#8217;s forecast, heavy rainfall is likely in several parts of eastern and western Rajasthan during 5-10 July. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning during this period, with light rain in some areas. People will get relief from the heat during this time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What kind of rainfall in East and Central India?</h2>



The meteorological department has issued an alert that heavy rainfall may occur at some places in Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim during 5-10 July. Heavy rain is expected in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 6 July, with light rain on other days.

According to the meteorological department&#8217;s alert, heavy rainfall is expected at several places and light to intermittent rain at many places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during 5-10 July. The possibility of thunderstorms with lightning cannot be ruled out during this period.

Rain with thunderstorms and strong winds is expected in Western India. The meteorological department has issued an alert that heavy rainfall will occur in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Konkan, and Saurashtra during 5-10 July.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Rainfall to continue in Northwest India</h2>



According to the meteorological department&#8217;s alert, the rainfall will continue at many places in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Haryana during 5-10 July. Heavy rain with strong winds and thunderstorms is possible during this period.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Clouds to burst with strong winds and lightning in South India</h2>



The meteorological department&#8217;s alert for South India states that heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Yanam, Kerala, Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Lakshadweep during 5-10 July. Strong winds and lightning are also expected during this period.
