<p>Following the accident, Air India has announced a relief measure for passengers. Air India has extended a one-time waiver for passengers booked on flights to and from Ahmedabad between 12th and 14th June. This waiver applies to tickets issued up to 12th June.</p>

<p>A help desk and assistance area have been set up outside the temporarily closed Ahmedabad airport for relatives of passengers on the London-bound Air India plane crash.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">242 People Onboard</h2>



<p>There were 242 passengers and crew members on board the aircraft, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian citizen. The accident occurred at approximately 1:38 PM when the plane, shortly after takeoff, crashed into a medical college hostel building, bursting into flames. The incident took place in the Meghaninagar area.</p>

<p><strong>Israel-Iran Conflict:</strong> A military clash is ongoing between Iran and Israel. This morning, Israel launched multiple attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. <p>The plane became a fireball upon impact. The aircraft was carrying a full load of fuel, which ignited on impact. The plane&#8217;s total fuel capacity was reportedly 126,000 litres. Approximately 55,000 litres were needed for the flight to London. The plane was carrying extra fuel. Sometimes, planes are unable to land due to unforeseen circumstances and need to remain airborne, necessitating extra fuel.</p>


<p>In an Air India Boeing 787 aircraft accident, 241 people lost their lives. Experts are now investigating the causes of the accident.</p>

<p>A major breakthrough in cancer treatment offers hope for thousands of patients. England&#8217;s NHS (National Health Service) has introduced a novel therapy called the “Trojan Horse” therapy, a world-first treatment specifically for myeloma, a type of blood cancer. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Blood Cancer Therapy – Why is this therapy so special?</h2>



<p>Myeloma is a cancer affecting plasma cells (cells that are part of our immune system) found in the spongy bone marrow within our bones. The therapy, formally known as belantamab mafodotin, is called a “Trojan Horse” because it operates similarly to the Greek myth&#8217;s Trojan Horse. Just as soldiers hid inside the Trojan Horse to infiltrate the city, this drug stealthily delivers a toxic payload directly into cancer cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How does this “smart drug” work? (Trojan Horse Cancer Drug)</h2>



<p>This therapy is a highly advanced form of chemotherapy. A potent chemotherapy drug is attached to an antibody. Antibodies are like soldiers fighting infections in our bodies. However, the antibodies used in this therapy are specifically designed to recognise markers present only on cancerous plasma cells.</p>



<p>These antibodies directly target cancerous cells, bind to their surface, and are then absorbed by the cancer cells. Once inside, the antibodies release their toxic payload, killing the cancer cells.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are its benefits?</h2>



<p><strong>Longer Relief:</strong> This therapy can suppress myeloma for approximately three times longer than existing treatments. Clinical trials have shown it can delay cancer progression for three years instead of 13 months.</p>



<p><strong>Reduced Side Effects:</strong> It&#8217;s superior to standard chemotherapy because it directly targets cancer cells, causing less damage to other parts of the body. This results in fewer side effects. However, some residual chemotherapy drug may spread after cancer cell elimination, potentially causing side effects like eye dryness and blurred vision.</p>



<p><strong>Improved Quality of Life:</strong> This therapy allows patients to live a normal life free from the disease. Paul Sylvester, a 60-year-old who received this therapy, describes it as life-changing. Diagnosed with myeloma two years ago, previous treatments required months of isolation. This therapy enabled his recovery within weeks, allowing him to enjoy life again.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which patients will benefit?</h2>



<p>Around 33,000 people in the UK live with myeloma. This new drug will be administered when initial treatments fail, potentially benefiting approximately 1,500 patients annually. NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) has deemed it cost-effective for the NHS.</p>



<p>Professor Martin Kaiser, a myeloma researcher, describes these as highly intelligent drugs with significantly reduced side effects compared to other medications. While myeloma isn&#8217;t yet fully curable, Professor Kaiser believes such drugs represent a significant step towards a &#8220;functional cure,&#8221; predicting that the percentage of patients achieving long-term remission could exceed 50% within the next five years.</p>



<p>These Antibody-Drug-Conjugates (ADCs) are being developed not only for myeloma but also for various other cancers. Research is underway for breast, stomach, and bowel cancers.</p>



<p>This therapy was developed in the UK by GSK, with initial research conducted in Stevenage and early clinical trials in London. Both Shelagh McKinlay of Myeloma UK charity and Health Minister, Caroline Smith, have hailed this approval as &#8220;revolutionary,&#8221; marking a significant advancement in cancer treatment for the UK.</p>

<p>Indian Railways: Jaipur. Infrastructure development, new lines, doubling, gauge conversion, and electrification works are being rapidly implemented to strengthen rail connectivity in Rajasthan. Meanwhile, the state has received another major gift from the central government. On Monday, the central government approved the final location survey for a new 96-kilometre railway line connecting Marwar Bagra (Jalore)-Sirohi-Swrupganj to enhance rail connectivity in the tribal-dominated region of the state.</p>



<p>Jalore is an important city in Rajasthan, located on the Samdari-Bhildi-Gandhidham rail route. Sirohi, the district headquarters, is located near Delhi-Ajmer-Abu Road-Ahmedabad. Regarding connecting the Sirohi district headquarters to the country&#8217;s railway network, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav (अश्विनी वैष्णव) stated that the long-standing demand to connect Sirohi to the rail network has now been fulfilled.</p>

It will also create employment opportunities.<br>-Residents of this region will have access to rail services to major cities in Rajasthan, as well as larger cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Delhi.<br>-It will serve as a strategic link for the transportation of goods and passengers from border areas.<br>-The rail network will facilitate the transportation of marble, granite, cement, food grains, fertilisers, and other commercial goods.<br>-It will provide better connectivity to Samdari and border towns like Munabao with the Western DFC route, establishing better rail connectivity to Mumbai.</p>



<p>After Sirohi district is connected to the railway network, over 1 million people will benefit. Towns and villages in close proximity to Sirohi will particularly benefit. This includes Shivganj, Pindwara, Rewadar, Mandar, Kalandri, and villages in the Jawal area.</p>

<p><strong>WHO salt intake recommendation:</strong> According to a New Zealand report, 80% of the salt consumed in India comes from home-cooked food. Especially in northern states, cultural and dietary habits lead people to consume more than 12 grams of salt daily. </p>



<p>This amount is more than double the recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Nutrition, which advise consuming less than 5 grams (approximately one teaspoon) of salt daily.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What are the harms of consuming too much salt? (WHO salt intake recommendation)</h2>



<p>Excessive salt intake (<em>Salt Intake</em>) increases the risk of high blood pressure (<em>Hypertension</em>), which can lead to heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. Worryingly, approximately 175,000 deaths in India each year are attributed to excessive salt consumption, as it exacerbates high blood pressure.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Habit of consuming excessive salt; home-cooked food is also a reason</h2>



<p>80% of the salt we consume (<em>Salt Intake</em>) comes from home-cooked meals or added salt. Everyday items like pickles, papad, chutney, salads, and buttermilk significantly increase the salt content in our diet. The remaining salt comes from restaurant food, street food, and packaged snacks or ready-to-eat items.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Some misconceptions about salt</h2>



<p>There are some common misconceptions about salt. Pink salt, rock salt, and sea salt contain as much sodium as regular white salt. The difference in minerals is negligible because we consume them in such small quantities that they offer no significant benefit. Using iodised salt is crucial for good health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why is consuming too much salt dangerous?</h2>



<p><strong>We consume too much salt:</strong> Indians consume 8 to 11 grams of salt (<em>Salt Intake</em>) daily, almost double the amount (5 grams) recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).</p>



<p><strong>Salt&#8217;s threat to life:</strong> Excessive salt consumption leads to high blood pressure, resulting in approximately 175,000 deaths in India annually.</p>



<p><strong>Millions suffer from high blood pressure:</strong> High blood pressure, a major cause of heart disease, affects 220 million people in India.</p>



<p><strong>The same situation worldwide:</strong> Globally, 2.6 million deaths occur annually due to heart disease, with more than half attributed to high blood pressure.</p>



<p><strong>Increasing risk in children:</strong> Approximately 70 million adolescents (youth) in India live with high blood pressure. They have a seven times higher risk of developing high blood pressure in adulthood.</p>



<p><strong>Benefits of reducing salt:</strong> Reducing salt intake can prevent and control high blood pressure. This also reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.</p>



<p><strong>Small reduction, big benefits:</strong> If India reduces daily salt consumption by just 3 grams, the risk of heart attacks could decrease by 4.6%, total deaths by 4.9%, and stroke risk by 6.5%.</p>

Train ticket confirmation: Chart to be prepared 24 hours before journey instead of 4 hours


<p><strong>Indian Railways:</strong> Indian Railways has undertaken a significant initiative to enhance passenger convenience. The waiting list chart for reserved tickets will now be prepared 24 hours before the journey, instead of 4 hours previously. This change will provide passengers ample time to make alternative travel arrangements and will also increase transparency in the railway system.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>New initiative launched on June 6th</strong></h2>



<p>This scheme was initially launched as a pilot project on a single train in the Bikaner division on June 6th. According to railway sources, the experiment has yielded positive results in the initial four days. This allows passengers to know in advance whether their tickets will be confirmed, enabling them to plan alternative travel arrangements if necessary.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Implementation on busy routes</strong></h2>



<p>Following the successful trial in Bikaner, this initiative will be implemented on other busy routes across the country. This includes routes from Delhi to states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, where waiting lists are typically very long.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Plans to add extra coaches and run clone trains</strong></h2>



<p>This proposal was put forward by railway officials during the Railway Minister&#8217;s visit to Bikaner, and was immediately approved. Officials stated that preparing the chart a day in advance will give the railways time to plan the addition of extra coaches and the operation of clone trains.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Passenger problems to be resolved</strong></h2>



<p>Currently, the chart is prepared at the last minute, causing problems for passengers and leaving the railways with insufficient time to add coaches or take other measures. Furthermore, an average of 21% of passengers cancel their bookings after ticket confirmation, and 4-5% do not travel at all. Preparing the chart a day in advance will allow the railways to better anticipate the actual number of passengers.</p>



<p>Importantly, the existing process for Tatkal (instant) tickets will remain unchanged despite this new system.</p>

<p><strong>SSC CGL 2025:</strong> The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) may introduce a significant change in the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination 2025. The commission has proposed a new policy to the central government, which, if approved, will be implemented in this year&#8217;s CGL recruitment process.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New Sliding Scheme to be Introduced</h2>



<p>Until now, the SSC CGL recruitment process did not include a waiting list. However, in recent years, it has been observed that several positions remain vacant even after document verification. To fill these vacancies, the commission is now planning to implement a ‘sliding scheme’.</p>



<p>Under this scheme, if a candidate, while being in the final selection list, does not appear for the appointment, the position will be filled by the next eligible candidate based on the cut-off. This will ensure that all advertised positions are filled.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Two New Positions Added in CGL 2025</h2>



<p>This year, recruitment will be conducted for 14,582 positions through the SSC CGL examination. Notably, two new positions have been included this time.</p>



<p>Office Superintendent, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)</p>



<p>Section Head, Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT)</p>



<p>For these positions, direct recruitment will be done through the SSC CGL examination for the first time. Interested candidates can apply until 4 July 2025.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Millions of Candidates to Benefit</h2>



<p>According to the SSC, approximately 36.73 lakh candidates applied for the previous CGL examination. If this new sliding scheme is implemented, millions of candidates who narrowly missed the final cut-off could benefit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What&#8217;s the Next Step?</h2>



<p>This new policy is currently awaiting approval from the central government. Once approved, it will be implemented from SSC CGL 2025. The commission aims to make the recruitment process more transparent, efficient, and in the best interests of the candidates.</p>



<p>The potential changes in SSC CGL 2025 will not only bring transparency to the selection process but will also fill thousands of vacant positions. The new policy could be a relief for millions of young people who have previously missed out by a small margin. This initiative by the commission could be a great opportunity for students preparing for government jobs.</p>
