<p>The Shri Lairai Yatra, held annually in May, attracts thousands of devotees from Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. A highlight of this festival is the ‘Agni Divya’ (fire-walking) ritual, where devotees called ‘Dhonds’ walk barefoot on burning embers to seek the blessings of Devi Lairai. Over 50,000 devotees attended this year&#8217;s Yatra, which began on Friday. Around 4-4:30 am, panic erupted in the crowd. According to eyewitnesses, the crowd became uncontrollable on a sloped path, and some people slipping triggered the stampede. Some sources suggested a possible electric shock added to the panic, worsening the situation. “It was complete chaos. People were falling over each other, there were screams, and there was no way out,” recounted a local devotee.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Administration&#8217;s Response and Emergency Measures</strong></h2>



<p>Emergency services were activated immediately following the incident. Police and local volunteers launched immediate rescue operations to evacuate the injured. Goa’s Health Minister, Vishwajit Rane, stated that five ambulances were dispatched to the scene via the 108 emergency ambulance service, with three others stationed in Assilo and three on standby. The injured were admitted to Goa Medical College (GMC), North Goa District Hospital, and Assilo Hospital. Rane shared on social media that of the 30 injured, eight were in critical condition, with two on ventilators. Four people (two men, two women) were declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while 10 others were discharged after treatment for minor injuries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Prime Minister and Chief Minister&#8217;s Visit</strong></h2>



<p>Goa&#8217;s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, immediately visited the North Goa District Hospital and Goa Medical College to check on the injured. He wrote on the social media platform X, “Deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning. I visited the hospital to meet the injured and have assured all possible support to the affected families. I am personally monitoring the situation.” Sawant also mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him to assess the situation and assured full support from the Centre. PM Modi&#8217;s office posted on X, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to the stampede in Shirgaon. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Local administration is providing assistance to the affected.”</p>

<p>Preliminary investigations attribute overcrowding and inadequate crowd control measures as the primary cause of this tragedy. North Goa&#8217;s Superintendent of Police, Akshat Kaushal, confirmed six deaths and stated that the investigation is ongoing. The administration had deployed over 1,000 police personnel for the Yatra, including aerial surveillance via drones. Despite this, the sheer number of people and the sloped pathway led to the situation spiralling out of control. Chief Minister Sawant announced a thorough investigation into the incident, led by the North Goa SP and Collector.</p>

<p>The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct NEET UG-2025, the nation&#8217;s largest medical entrance examination, on 4 May. The exam will be held from 2 PM to 5 PM. Alwar district has established 24 examination centres. Entry to these centres will begin at 11 AM and close at 1:30 PM.</p>



<p>8952 students from the district will participate in this examination. The examination centres will be equipped with CCTV, biometric systems, and jammers. To prevent cheating and maintain order, 6 police and home guard personnel will be deployed at centres with a seating capacity of 480, while 10 personnel will be deployed at centres with a larger capacity. Five duty magistrates have been appointed. The District Nodal Officer for the examination is ADM City Bina Mahawar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Options Even Without MBBS Admission</h2>



<p>Experts say that there is no need to panic or get discouraged if admission to MBBS is not secured. There are ample opportunities for career, prestige, and income in other fields as well. MBBS is not the only option. Students who have completed their 12th standard with a Biology background have numerous options such as Forensic Science, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Biotechnology, Clinical Research, Nutrition Science, and Environmental Science. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Last Year, General Candidate with 652 Marks Secured Government Medical College Seat</h2>



<p>The qualifying cutoff only allows students to participate in counselling. Most students taking the NEET UG exam dream of getting into an MBBS course. Last year (2024), a general and OBC student with 652 marks secured an MBBS seat in a government medical college. A student with 648 marks secured admission in the EWS category. Meanwhile, students with 549 and 529 marks secured seats in the SC and ST categories respectively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Over 2.3 Million Registered Nationwide</h2>



<p>This year, over 2.3 million candidates have registered for the examination nationwide. In the past six years, out of a total of 11,090,000 candidates who took the exam, 5,893,000 qualified. Approximately 5.2 million candidates did not qualify. Around 1.2 million students are expected to qualify for NEET UG-2025, but there are only 118,190 MBBS seats available across approximately 780 government and private medical colleges nationwide.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BPSSC SI Exam Pattern: The SI recruitment exam will be held in two phases</h2>



<p>The SI Exam will be conducted in two phases: a preliminary exam and a main exam. The preliminary or prelims exam will be of 200 marks, comprising 100 questions. The exam duration will be 2 hours. Questions will be related to general knowledge and current affairs. The main exam will have two papers. The first paper will be of 200 marks and the second paper will also be of 200 marks. Both exams will have a duration of 2 hours. The first paper will be on General Hindi. The second paper will cover General Studies, General Science, Civics, Indian History, Indian Geography, Mathematics and Mental Ability.</p>

<p>The Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) will conduct the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment examination on 18 May 2025. The BPSSC SI Exam will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, lasting two hours. Candidates must arrive at the examination centre by 8:30 AM.</p>

<p><strong>CG Accident:</strong> A promising student, Ashutosh Agrawal, tragically died in a horrific road accident in the Karli area of Dantewada district early Thursday morning. Ashutosh was preparing for the UPSC exam, and his untimely death has sent shockwaves of grief throughout Dantewada town. The accident occurred around 3:30 am on the Gidam police station road.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Injured Referred to Medical College</h2>



<p>According to reports, Ashutosh Agrawal was the eldest son of Prashant Agrawal, a prominent businessman in the town. Late at night, after finishing his studies, he went for a ride on an Activa scooter with Krishna Yadav, who works at his shop. During this time, on the Police Line Karli road, a high-speed Innova vehicle, in an attempt to avoid a buffalo, collided violently with their scooter and then fled the scene. A high-speed vehicle is described in this report.</p>



<p>Both Ashutosh Agrawal and Krishna Yadav were seriously injured in the accident. With the help of local people, they were brought to Dantewada District Hospital, where doctors declared that Ashutosh&#8217;s life could not be saved due to a ruptured liver. Krishna Yadav has been referred to the Medical College in Jagdalpur.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Preparing for the UPSC Exam</h2>



<p><strong>CG Accident:</strong> According to family members, Ashutosh was a bright student and after completing his UPSC coaching in Delhi, he returned to Dantewada. He was preparing for the exam locally. To avoid any disruption to his studies, the family provided him with a room where he studied. </p>
